Police station to locate in Suvarnabhumi Airport
BANGKOK, Sept 25 (TNA) – Thailand’s central government said Friday it is setting up a Suvarnabhumi International Airport ‘airport police’ unit to maintain safety at the country’s main port of entry in an attempt to restore confidence among travellers following complaints on airport scams by foreign visitors.
Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said after chairing a committee assigned to solve problems and improve service efficiency of Suvarnabhumi Airport that the meeting agreed in principle to set up a police station in the airport.
Mr Suthep said that a combined force of 280 police officers from the Tourist Police Division and Central Investigation Bureau will supervise security and monitor the airport’s area of 8,000 acres, while present airport security personnel will be police assistants.
The deputy premier said that the issue will be raised at the national police board meeting in two weeks and the new police station will be co-sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Airports of Thailand (AoT).
The government’s move came as some foreign governments issued travel warnings for their citizens alerting travellers of the risk of being accused of shoplifting as there are no clear boundaries separating competing shops and public areas in the airport’s duty-free shopping zones.
The warning noted that innocent shoppers have been the subject of allegations of suspected theft.
Meanwhile, AoT director Serirat Prasutanont said the number of complaints regarding airport scams such as taxi touts and illegal tour guides has decreased. The new airport police presence will help ensure the safety and restore confidence among airport users, he said. (TNA)
